Contemporary claims

Contemporary claims are those that relate to matters that occurred on or after 21 September 1992 and commonly focus on specific issues and local areas. Many contemporary claims have been heard on an urgent or priority basis, such as Te Kura Kaupapa Māori Urgent Inquiry (Wai 1718) and the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act Inquiry (Wai 2660).

Some claims may be left over from previous Tribunal inquiries and from settlements restricted to historical grievances. Others may be addressed in the kaupapa inquiry programme. A dedicated inquiry process will be required to address them efficiently.

In April 2015 the Waitangi Tribunal’s chairperson, Chief Judge Wilson Isaac, issued a memorandum outlining the Kaupapa Inquiry Programme.
